About the Challenge

Building on the success of the “Walk 100 Miles with the Mayor” program, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has issued a new challenge – walk or run a 5K (3.1 miles) with him on Sunday, Nov. 13, beginning at 2 p.m. Participating in the 5K is completely free, and individuals of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join.

The “Mayor’s Challenge” also includes a free, nine-week training program, designed for people at different fitness levels to be prepared to walk or run the 5K event on Nov. 13. Through partnerships with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee and the Metro Parks and Recreation Department, training sessions will be held at Y centers and in city parks and community centers throughout Davidson County. Training opportunities are available six days a week at various times of the day – so everyone can fit training into their schedule!

By participating in the free training program, you will have access to fitness professionals and opportunities to win free walking/running gear from other community partners. Mayor Dean will be attending training sessions when possible, so you’ll also have the chance to train alongside him.

Registrants will also have multiple opportunities to participate in free “Pressure Check” screenings, provided by our partner HCA TriStar Stroke Network. These screenings will allow participants to log and monitor their blood pressure, while further educating themselves on healthy living practices and stroke prevention.

Along with individuals, Mayor Dean is encouraging local businesses and organizations to form teams to train together and participate in the “Mayor’s Challenge.” Teams and individuals can track their training progress and blood pressure on this site and earn points towards the “Step Up to the Challenge” Community Competition. Top teams and individuals will be recognized throughout the nine-week training period and on race day.

It’s time for Nashvillians to get healthy and stay healthy, and it’s more fun if we do it together. Register for the “Mayor’s Challenge” today!
